The Boost button is the most tempting button on Facebook and Instagram. It's quick and simple. It's also the least effective way to spend most ad budgets.

Many businesses' first experience of advertising is a single tap: Boost post.

It feels like advertising. Money is spent, numbers go up, the post reaches more people. But for most business goals, boosting leaves a lot of value on the table.

What boosting is

Boosting takes a post you've already published and shows it to more people. You choose a basic goal, a simple audience, a budget and a duration. It takes a minute.

Good for:

  • Quick visibility for an announcement or event.
  • Getting more eyes on a post that's already doing well.
  • Businesses just starting out with very small budgets.

Limited because:

  • Objectives are simplified, so the platform may optimize for likes or visits rather than sales.
  • Targeting options are narrower.
  • Testing different versions is difficult.
  • Tracking real business results is limited.

What running an ad is

Running an ad through Meta Ads Manager gives you full control over how your money is spent.

You can:

  • Choose specific objectives such as leads, messages, website traffic or purchases.
  • Build detailed audiences, including people who visited your website or engaged with your content.
  • Choose placements: feed, stories, reels, Messenger and more.
  • Test different images, videos, headlines and audiences against each other.
  • Track conversions on your website using Meta's tracking tools.
Boosting asks the platform to show your post. Ads Manager tells it what you actually want.

Why the difference matters

When you boost a post, the platform often optimizes for cheap engagement, likes and comments, because that's what boosting tends to reward. Engagement looks good but doesn't always lead to sales.

When you run a proper campaign with a sales or leads objective, the platform looks for people more likely to take that action. Results may cost more per click, but often less per customer.

When to use each

Boost when:

  • You want quick visibility and aren't measuring sales.
  • The budget is very small and the goal is simple.

Use Ads Manager when:

  • You want leads, messages or sales.
  • You want to retarget people who already know you.
  • You want to learn what works through testing.
  • You're spending enough that efficiency matters.

How to make the switch

If you've only ever boosted, moving to Ads Manager doesn't have to be complicated:

  1. Set up tracking. Install Meta's tracking on your website so you can measure real actions.
  2. Pick one objective. Messages, leads or sales.
  3. Start with one audience. People who already engaged with your page are a good first test.
  4. Use two or three ad variations. Let results show which works.
  5. Wait a week before judging. Early results swing a lot.

If you still want the simplicity of boosting, boost only posts that are already performing well organically, and give each boost a clear goal and an end date. Treat it as a quick amplifier, not as your advertising strategy.
